overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with children, train from Bangkok to Surat thani

We have made it to Surat Thani, Thailand. It was over 24 hours of train travel, half of which was AMAZING, half of which was AWFUL! I will start with the awful so I can end with the good.

After our first train trip from Chiang Mai to Bangkok (the good one) we ran to make our next train. This should have been our first clue to just wait for the next train that we could get another sleeper car on. But apparently it takes us like 16 times before we learn something because everytime we have to rush to go somewhere it never goes well.

So as we were running to the train with 8 bags of stuff we made our way to our seats. It was a pretty crappy train even though I paid almost the same as the fancy sleeper train from the night before. The bathrooms were totally gross and even though we sat very far from them we could smell them the whole time. Peyton immediately asked, “where’s our bed?”. No bed on this one, we each got our own little seat, but no worries children you only have to sit still for 9 hours and then we will be there. Why did I not turn around when I passed the stinky potty?

Jarrett and a porter loading our crap on the train

We got out all of the video games and got cozy. It was going pretty well for about 1 hour, the boys were happily playing their games and Jarrett and I were working on his book together putting the final touches. I had gone to the bathroom a couple of times and smiled at everyone each way and everyone seemed so happy and good natured, they were even making googly eyes at the boys.

the nice man smiling at the camera was not the man from the story, he was just our nice neighbor. The mean man had not boarded yet.

Peyton and Conner sharing headphones and watching a movie

Jarrett and I are sitting beside each other when a man comes up to us. I had seen him before , he was 5 rows behind us. A young European man with his wife and he was working on his laptop. He comes up to us and does not complain about the boys being loud because they had their noses in their DS’s which were turned on silent, but he came to complain about me and Jarrett talking either too loudly or just about his book, I did not quite understand. I was in shock and it took me a few moments to process what he was saying. Something about us going back and forth about what we liked and didn’t and to keep it down please. Now I am not a very quiet person and Jarrett says that I yell sometimes when I think I am talking, but I honestly was just talking normal. Besides, this train was a joke of loudness, the conductor blared the horn every few seconds for the entire 9 hours and we would have to wait to talk until it was over. That along with the other hundred people talking and eating made it normal, middle of the day Thailand transportation.

But no matter how stupid I thought the guy was or how loud I was or was not being, I am a peaceful person, so I smiled and said sure, we can try to talk softer.

Now onto Jarrett. Not quite as peaceful as me and he had not slept the night before, he was pretty put out and wanted to go back and talk to the guy, but I asked him for me to puh-lease let it go. I was not in the mood for drama on this small train and I kept having to pee in the stinky bathroom and I did not want to have to pass him and it be awkward. Jarrett decided that he loved me more than being right with the bully man so he conceded and we went back to his book.

Sadly the man did not know what was good for him and he came back. Only this time it was to plug in his laptop right in front of us (that is where the plug on the train was) and sit at our feet. It only took about 1/10 of a second for Jarrett to let into him and rip him a new one about what his beef was with us when clearly he did not have issues with personal space and so on. Now we might be rightly accused of being loud. Jarrett went on and on and the man was in shock. I was mortified at the time even though all that Jarrett was saying was true but now I laugh my head off at it.

The man went back to his seat.

Jarrett cooled off a bit. And true to his nature when he has had adequate sleep he got up and went to apologize to the man. He told him that he meant all he said but he was overly harsh and he was sorry. I was proud of him standing up for us and then apologizing. It all went well and I could still go potty and we smiled at each other. He even came up later and thanked Jarrett for apologizing and complimented the boys’ fire pants on the way out. Oh my.

While bully man was one huge part of the awful train trip, the main part was the boys having to sit still on a beautiful day for 9 hours back to back with our 12 hours train trip. I will never do that again, but I will go on another sleeper train!!!

Sleeper trains rock!

Rewind from bad train to the day before and we got onto the first train, the sleeper one at 5 pm. I was nervous because I had really wanted to get a 1st class cabin because it was private and I was not sure I would feel comfortable sleeping with other people watching me. Well it turns out that it was super private and we had our own cabin anyways since we had booked 4 beds and that is how many are in each cubby.

so excited to ride our first over night train

It was too cool. We had 2 couch size seats facing each other that turned into beds and the boys had 2 beds above us with an awesome ladder to get to them.

this man was so kind and  was assigned to our car the entire time making we had everything we needed and were safe

we were so shocked and happy that there was a plug! and even more perfect since Jarrett is a major dork and travels with a power strip in his backpack so not one electronic bit the dust on this trip!

point proven

the boys closed their curtains and played in their caves almost the entire time, I was so happy for them

we even had our own mirror

if this was good imagine what the other train looked like

we walked around a little bit but it was kind of dangerous between cars so I made the boys hold my hand:) That is the tracks right where your foot could slip

the funky restaurant car. The boys are celebrities in Thailand, everyone is always touching them and kissing them. Sometimes they like it and sometimes they don’t

I really wanted to eat in there but it was always full and they were blaring Shania Twain and I could not hear a thing, even Conner was holding his ears and begging to get out. We ordered food to have brought to our car, that was fun too.

It was so fun to have no distractions, no internet and to be in a small space as a family. We just talked and hung out and Jarrett and I watched the rest of Season 3 of Glee which he had downloaded just for this occasion.

Peyton told us this looong story from a funny part in his movie, I finally got my camera out I was having such a fun time watching him

he was crying by the end from all of the laughing

I will always choose to travel by sleeper train if it is an option-A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

overnight train from Chiang Mai to Surat Thani with children

First of all, thank you all for your kind messages about Trek this past week. It was a difficult week for me, I just felt really down about losing him. I was also not feeling well so that never helps.

I am feeling better today and we are on our way to our new home!

our last night in Pai

We left Pai yesterday. I know there were a few more postcards and packages coming so we left some money with the family we were renting from and they said they would send it to our new house:) We should have a new address in a few days.

my last drive to our swiss family house

The only way to get to and from Pai is by mini bus. It is 3 hours of over 700 curves up and down the mountains. Conner and I both threw up, I thankfully made it to the bathroom when we stopped, Conner was not so lucky. Or maybe Jarrett wasn’t because he was sitting by him. Oh my.

Our bags took up the entire top of the minivan. The Thai guy was giving us a playful but hard time! hehe. Everyone else had just one backpack. We usually travel with the boys’ 3 suitcases, my purse, Jarrett backpack and his laptop bag. We had 4 extra bags since we are moving from house to house so I kept things I would have normally given away so I would not have to rebuy them.

We made it to Chiang Mai happy to be out of the van. I had booked a hotel with a pool so that was so nice to come “home” to. Even after being in Thailand for months I am still suprised by the prices. We have a room with a bathtub, a beautiful salt water pool, and a free breakfast for $25 a night! We got in and went straight to get some mexican food. We LOVE mexican food and have not had it in months, it was all we dreamed it would be.

relaxing after moving and traveling for 3 days

We were back to our old ways of all sleeping in the same bed since that is our only option! hehe. 4 in one king size bed, it was so cozy and I loved snuggling and having everyone so close to me all night. It reminded me of when Trek was first born and we would all 5 sleep in one king size bed. It was pretty squishy but I treasure those memories.

Trek 7 weeks old, Conner 4 years, Peyton 5 years-sweet brothers

We are going to ride our first overnight train tonight. We are SO excited. We have 4 beds and there is a restaurant car on board. For all 4 of us to ride for 20 hours on 2 trains for over 1400 miles it was $200 total. I thought that was such a great deal. I am so excited to read and relax since I will have nothing better to do.

Thailand train route map

Chiang Mai is in the middle of Thailand and there is a read line from it to Bangkok where we will stop to change trains and go on to Surat Thani which is down into the skinny part of the bottom of Thailand

We leave tonight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and then when we get to Bangkok in the morning we hop on another train to Surat Thani. That is our new home. We know nothing about it! There was only 11 hotels I could find online, so I am thinking it is not very touristy. We are in a hotel for 2 nights, Jarrett has a meeting on Sunday for the school and then hopefully we can find a house.

I am excited for the change and new adventure!

Chiang Mai, Starbucks, starbucks in Thailand

I feel like no words are needed for this picture. How many people see this and their heart beats a little faster and their mouth starts to water? Mine is, but I can’t do a dang thing about it since the closest Starbucks is 134 km away in Chiang Mai. So I just stare and fondly remember how my Iced Caramel Macchiato with extra caramel tasted and the smile it brought me.

Conner and I scootered over bright and early to get a coffee last week when we were in Chiang Mai

coffee stealer!

ahhhh, heaven in a cup

the caffeine was getting to us

the best way to start the morning

now across the street for Conner’s vice-McDonalds hashbrowns (he ordered 10, but I asked him if we could start out with 3)

on the walk in front of Micky D’s Conner found this gold zipper handle-he was convinced it was solid gold since when he bit it it did not break

After our bellies were full of our favorite treats I decided to do something daring and oh so indulgent.

I must admit something, even though I love to be outdoors, get dirty, never buy myself new clothes or do my hair, I am truly a diva a heart. When Jarrett’s books start bringing in the big bucks there is something very divaish on the top of my list. A personal hair stylist. I want someone to come over every morning and do my hair for me. I just read the other day that Princess Kate does not have a personal sylist-what?! Am I more snotty than a princess that I want one?! Oh well I do and I got a taste of how wonderful it would be on this Starbucks morning.

in the hair place was this wall of plumerias, Conner picked out which one was for each of my amazing sons on my tattoo

A nice Thai lady shampooed my hair, massaged my head and then meticulously straightened each strand of my hair for exactly $5. It was just as dreamy as I imagined it would be.

from pai to chiang mai

After whipping into our hotel after our long moped ride, we could not wait to take a warm shower. I was excited to have a blow dryer at the hotel so I could even do my hair! It was not meant to be though since when he got into the room and we looked at the clock and it was 5 pm. We were supposed to meet Jen and Colt at the Night Bazaar at that time. We put back on our dirty clothes, I looked the other way at our dirty legs from the dusty road and we hailed a tuk tuk.

We were on our way to crash a honeymoon

swapping adventure stories. Colt and Jen had a rockin adventurous honeymoon they got to go to the Golden Triangle where the Burma/Laos/Thailand border meets and ride elephants!

Colt telling one of their adventure stories

I think they are such a beautiful couple. Even though we are the same age as them they look younger and fresher than us, I think 3 babies wonderfully ages you quicker!

We met them at McDonalds since the boys were dying for a happy meal. In Pai there are (thankfully) no fast food chains to tempt us, so we were all so excited to enjoy the greasiness for the weekend. Conner scarffed down his nuggets, but was very disappointed in his lamo happy meal toy that none of us could figure out how to operate.

we big people wanted some Thai food so we found a street vendor

Jen and Colt talked me into trying yellow curry which I have up until this point been scared of (i really liked it!) and Jen tried my favorite Pad Thai

As if we had not crashed their honeymoon enough they then invited up to their resort pool the next day. The boys could not wait to check out the pool!

the Four Seasons Chiang Mai

beautiful flower arrangements were throughout the resort, we were so impressed even Conner and Jarrett had to stop and admire them

Peyton’s front tooth is coming in-I am going to miss his toothless grin

flower heads floating on water

Jarrett mentioned that he would like arrangements like this at our home one day

the pool! I am not sure the boys ever got out the whole time we were there

never mind, yes they did to eat delicious resort food

honeymooners

congratulations Colt and Jen! I know you will live happily every after

and thank you for my real-life hug-xoxo

Pai to Chiang Mai by motorbike, with kids, in the rain for 134 km

pai to chiang mai by motorbike

We had some friends visiting Chiang Mai from Maui and they invited us to come and visit them! We were so excited to get to see a familiar face and hug a real live friend, but we went back a forth for a little while. We wanted to see them so bad, but Chiang Mai is over 3 hours from Pai and through a twisting mountain road. We were not sure it was a good idea with kids, on a motorbike, or at all. We ended up saying, “what the heck” and going, it took us 7 hours by moped, but it was totally worth it! The drive was cold and long, but we were in high spirits and had so much fun. It was one of our best adventures so far.all geared up and ready to go: gas-check, icy coca-cola in the cup holder-check, ponchos-check, unrealistic giddiness-check

134 kilometers in the rain

I had to stop and buy some shades to block the rain (and so super cool and dorky)

on the drive a picture of the King and Queen

check point-we got stopped at a few of these, but they just asked where we were going

there are Buddhist spiritual houses randomly on the side of the highway

snack and potty break

crispy bacon I packed for a snack

Jarret and Conner zooming ahead-there is supposedly 762 curves from Chiang Mai to Pai-I believe it

driving through the clouds, Peyton thought this was so coolPeyton was in charge of letting me know how many miles were left

cows on the road

another check point

we stopped for a snack and to get out of the rain for a little bit

Peyton stepped on a nail while we were there, the nice lady that ran the store fixed him all up

all better and he put his shoes back on, he did not want to go barefoot anymore

she dotted on the boys the whole time we were there

we stopped for a warm lunch

we ordered Pad thai, chicken noodle soup, and chicken and rice

it took so long to get down the mountain because the road was wet and the curves were sharp, but it was so beautiful

a mudslide on the highway! it was fixed when we came back 3 days later

i thought this was so creative how they built this road sign

we passed this cool house that was built into the side of the mountain

potty break #2

many beautiful Buddhist temples on the drive

such an amazing drive

i had to pull over and take a picture of this sky-it reminded Peyton and I of Trek

one more snack break before Chiang Mai

the man’s shop had so much cool stuff in it we stayed for 15 minutes just checking it all out

his jogging trophies (i didn’t know you could get a trophy for jogging!)

i finally have a use for all my coke cans (you too mama and the amanda’s)

because that is how all us women carry around our beer

the Thai shaka

this is what 6 hours in a moped makes your hair look like

we made it to Chiang Mai!

in the big city, waiting behind Jarrett at a red light

this place was crazy!!! glad we learned to drive mopeds in the quiet country first

Jarrett my hero! a well-deserved fist pump, he found our hotel in the big city!
